Background

On 12 December 2012, the United Nations unanimously endorsed a historic resolution urging all countries to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage (UHC) - everyone, everywhere should have access to quality, affordable health care - as an essential priority for international development.

In 2014, the Universal Health Coverage Coalition started to celebrate the anniversary of this important date with the creation of Universal Health Coverage Day. Since then, the day has become the annual rallying point for the growing global movement for health for all.

Each year on 12.12, UHC advocates raise our voices to share the stories of the millions of people still waiting for health, to call on leaders to make bigger and smarter investments in health, and to remind the world that health for all is imperative for the world we want.

UHC2030 has been supporting UHC Coalition partners to organise annual campaigns since the establishment of this partnership in 2016.

This movement brought diverse partners together to explore how to drive progress towards UHC. In 2017, this action and momentum from governments, international agencies and civil societies around the world resulted in this date being formally recognised by the UN General Assembly as the International Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day), a UN-designated official day.

The UN General Assembly resolution also recognised UHC2030 as a relevant initiative to provide support to Member States for the development and strengthening of the sustainability of UHC at the national level.

Following the high-level supports from UN Member States, UHC2030 has convened a multi-stakeholder Coordination Group of UHC Day (12/12CG), comprising of a mix of Member States, organisations of the United Nations system and other global organisations, as well as other relevant stakeholders, including civil society, philanthropic foundation, the private sector and academia.

The initial members of 12/12CG include representatives from the UN Secretariat, Department of Public Information;  WHO Communications Department; World Bank Health, Nutrition and Population, Communications Team; UNICEF Communications Team; Government of Japan; Government of Thailand; Rockefeller Foundation; Civil Society Engagement Mechanism; World Economic Forum and Health System Global.
